COURT ORDER: NANS President, BarambuSuspends Nationwide Mass Action, Urges Govt to Honour FGN-ASUU Agreements, Begs Lecturers to Resume
The newly elected “Visionary” President of the largest student body in Africa – National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS), Comrade Usman Umar Barambu, GCNS, has directed the leaderships of NANS in all six geo-political zones of the organization to suspend the early planned man mass regional protests and national mass action over the lingering industrial action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU).
This is contained in a letter signed by the President, Comrade Barambu and made available to the newsmen, by the Secretary General of the association, Comrade Usman Baba Kankia, today, in Abuja.
NANS President, Comrade Barambu also charged federal government of Nigeria to honour the agreements it had with the striking union.Putting the interests of Nigerian Students first, Barambu appealed the striking lecturers to resume to class
The letter reads,“NOTIFICATION FOR STAND DOWN ACTIONS. I convey to you solidarity greetings from the Leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS). I am also pleased to congratulate all Nigerian students for standing out during the impasse between ASUU and the Federal Government, let me also commend the resilience, doggedness and commitment displayed by students throughout the period of the strike which has lasted for 7 months. I urge you all to consider your actions as a struggle for the emancipation of our educational sector. It s a win-win situation. Victory at last.
May I also use this opportunity to also urge the Federal Government to fulfill its own parts of the negotiation as we anticipate a smooth outcome in the negotiating process, in line with the directives and order of the National Industrial Court issuing an order for ASUU (our Lecturers) to return back to the class room. I hereby Stand down all NANS protests Nationwide.
“More also, may I use this singular privilege to appeal to our dear lecturers(ASUU) that the court order is a progressive way forward to achieve a positive results at the negotiation table for it is a win win for all. We hope and believe ASUU will accept the court ruling in good faith as it affects the future of our dear country.

Earlier, the National Industrial Court has ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to go back to work.The Federal Government in a suit, prayed for the order for ASUU to call off its seven months strike.The Minister of Labour and Employment on behalf of the Federal Government had filed the matter before the court by way of referral to resolve the issue of the ongoing strike by ASUU.
