A hostage standoff in which a gunman demanded a Beirut bank let him withdraw his trapped savings has ended with the man’s surrender and no injuries. Authorities say 42-year-old Bassam al-Sheikh Hussein entered the Federal Bank in Beirut’s bustling Hamra district with a shotgun and a canister of gasoline and threatened to set himself on fire unless he was allowed to take out his money. After hours of negotiations, he accepted an offer from the bank to receive part of his savings, according to local media and a depositors group that took part in the talks. He then released his hostages and surrendered. Hussein was holding at least six bank employees hostage, according to an official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations earlier on Thursday. He had fired three warning shots, according to the official. Local media reported he has about $200,000 stuck in the bank.

The protesters arrived at the gate at exactly 11:30 am singing “solidarity forever, we shall always fight for our rights.” The protesters who carried placards with different inscriptions were led by Mrs. Funmi Sessi, Lagos state chairman of NLC, and Human Rights Activist, Barrister Femi Falana. An explosion on Thursday evening claimed two lives including a masquerade leaving many others injured in Idoji area of Okene local government council of Kogi State.The incident occurred at the Idoji part of the local government where the Echeane festival, an annual masquerade festival was ongoing.  Eyewitnesses disclosed that the bomb suspected to be a local explosive was detonated in a gathering of spectators at the festival, adding that it left nails gouged in the wounded legs of some of the victims. One of the residents of the area who witnessed the incident Usman Animuko Sani stated that the explosion occurred around 6 pm on Thursday evening when some people including masquerades gathered to celebrate the annual Echeane festival in Okene.Sani who disclosed that the sound of the explosion affected many residents of the area, stated that a man whose name and address are yet to be identified lost two of his legs while many others sustained injuries. The Association of Nigeria Female Students Kogi state chapter, today June 2nd commemorated the World Menstrual Hygiene day with a parley with secondary school students across Kogi State. State Coordinator of the Association, Comr Jimoh Saidat Oziohu, said the visit was to enlighten young female students across the three senatorial districts of the state on the importance of menstrual hygiene and the need for personal cleanliness.
